A Tribute to Betty and Bleu: Pillars of FCDS
In 2024, FCDS said goodbye to two of its most steadfast pillars, Betty Fernandez and Bleu Thompson, who collectively dedicated over 70 years to the organization. Their retirements mark the end of an era, and though they have stepped away from their roles, their impact remains deeply woven into the fabric of FCDS.
Betty Fernandez: A Quiet Strength
Betty Fernandez, our long-time Administrative Manager, retired in December after approximately 44 years of service. For those of us who had the privilege of working with her, Betty was more than just a leader; she was the backbone of our administration. When I first joined FCDS, Betty was my boss for two years, and through her, I learned how to navigate the professional landscape of the organization.
Betty had a gift, one that few possess. She could provide direction with grace, offer guidance without condescension, and maintain a calm presence that reassured everyone around her. She was second only to Jill, our former Project Director, and carried out her responsibilities effortlessly, making complex tasks seem manageable. She led not through force but through quiet influence, and her wisdom was something I admired deeply.
For many of us, Betty was the steady presence that kept things running smoothly. She understood the nuances of the job and made sure those around her did, too. She always had a good word to say, whether it was a piece of professional advice or a moment of encouragement when needed most.
Bleu: A Guide, A Leader, A Friend
Bleu, who retired in June after 30 years at FCDS, played a different but equally crucial role in my journey here. When I first started, she was the one who helped me find my footing, guiding me through the day-to-day operations and making sure I understood how things worked. She later became my boss for a year and a half, and over time—about five years after we first met—she became one of my closest friends.
Bleu was more than just a colleague; she was a leader many leaned on for support, and she always made people feel welcome. She and our mutual best friend Edith taught me that professionalism and friendship are not mutually exclusive. They showed me that you can maintain respect and integrity in the workplace while building meaningful relationships outside of it.
Her retirement, like Betty’s, leaves a noticeable void at FCDS. But the lessons she imparted and her support will not be forgotten.
Their Legacy
Betty and Bleu were not just administration; they were the foundations of our daily operations, the people we leaned on, and the ones who made sure things got done and done well. Their dedication, leadership, and kindness left a lasting mark on FCDS and on all of us who had the privilege to work alongside them.
Though they are no longer a part of our workplace, their influence remains. They have set a standard for professionalism, mentorship, and camaraderie that will continue to shape FCDS for years to come.
To Betty and Bleu, thank you for everything. You will always be a part of this organization’s story.
